What margins are you making across your business and where are the opportunities?
 

What level of analysis are you doing to ensure your business profitability is mapped out in front of time to ensure you have control of the P&L. Rates Analysis

How do your rates of pay compare to the wider market to understand if where your conditions of employment sit within the industry?

 

Are your rates and sales prices correct and inclusive of your desired margin and OH contributions? Often business who have not looked into this accurately find themselves charging too much or too little with regards to service prices which have implications in both aspects.

 

Process Mapping

Whole of process execution mapping – Is it a start to finish construction or maintenance execution process that needs to be stepped out, analysed for efficiency and effectiveness and streamlined or is it complete business function like HR or recruitment that has lost touch with its operational counterparts?

Have employees got a sound understanding of key business processes to ensure there is a smooth and efficient operational process? How does this link to the quantifiable assessment of operational effectiveness?

 

Commercial and Contractual Business Analysis

Are you quoting whole of job price and not supporting this with sound commercial and contractual structures and frameworks for your contributing contractors/suppliers?

 

How are you pricing and estimating your services and are you pricing them with the degree of consistency and reproducibility required to allow you to forecast effectively, budget accurately and hold people accountable to meeting the deliverables attached to them?


Are you wearing all the risk and potential for loss without control over those doing the work on your behalf?

 

How are you ensuring accountability for those you are relying on to execute some or all of the service you are selling? e.g. are you monitoring contractors and ensuring they have skin in the game when it comes to honouring agreements? If not, how can we write that into your agreements to ensure that you are protected and all stakeholders are doing their bit as agreed?

 

People Management 

Do the people in your business have an understanding for what they are being employed to do? Are these expectations formalised and clear with regards to the role and responsibilities?


Are your teams being effectively coached and mentored and brought up to speed with regards to expectations and given every chance to succeed in their role? If not, where is this slipping?

 

Safety and Risk

Are you effectively identifying all of your safety and business risks and do you have an action plan with regards to managing these in line with your legislative obligations?

Do you have a sufficient Safety Management System in place that enables you to identify, analyse and control and communicate all of these risks?

Are your employees sufficiently educated with regards to risk management and do they have suitable training and experience to safely perform their roles in your organisation?

What are your business goals and how did you work them out?

What does the business need to look like in order to meet your intended goals?

Is it a market share figure? Is it a year on year growth figure? Is it a specific profitability figure you are looking for? Do you want to build your business to a certain sales point and sell it off for someone else to build on?

Are you tracking your work flow? Do you measure your current Work in Hand (WIH) against your budget to see if you are on track to meet or exceed your forecasts or budget?

Is there control on your workflow so that if something does not go to plan you have the ability to recover and replaced lost revenue or margin?

Estimated costs vs Actuals

What did you sell your service for and what did it truly cost you? Is the service viable at the price you are selling it at and is the cost a true representation of the work done?
